  1. Before you apply

    0/4
    • For most programmes you register through Studielink first. Some institutions use their own method for applicants from abroad — check with your institution.

    • 15 January for numerus fixus programmes and some programmes with selection; 1 May for other Bachelor's programmes. Master's programmes set their own deadlines, and institutions may set earlier ones for applicants from abroad.

    • The easiest way is to let your institution consult Nuffic, which is free for you. The institution makes the final decision. A personal evaluation through IDW is possible but not free and takes at least 10 weeks.

    • Most international programmes are taught in English and ask for IELTS or TOEFL; Dutch-taught programmes ask for proof of Dutch. Each programme sets the test and score it accepts.

  2. Application documents

    0/7
    • Your secondary school diploma, and for a Master's your Bachelor's degree. You add your previous education in Studielink; the institution tells you which copies to upload.

    • An overview of your subjects and grades. Check with the institution whether it needs a translation and in which form.

    • IELTS, TOEFL or another test your programme accepts. Book it early — results take time.

    • Part of almost every application, and needed later for the residence permit and registration.

    If requested

    Motivation letter

Common for Master's programmes and selective Bachelor's. Dutch committees like a direct, concrete letter — our guide explains what they look for.

Only if it applies to you

    • Often asked for Master's programmes and programmes with selection.

    • Some Master's programmes ask for academic references. Ask your referees early.

  3. Depending on your situation

    0/2
    • Apply via Studielink before 15 January, 23:59 CET. You can apply to at most two numerus fixus programmes a year (Medicine, Dentistry, Dental hygiene and Physiotherapy: one). Ranking numbers come on 15 April; an offered place must be accepted within two weeks.

    • An official comparison of your diploma with a Dutch one. It does not decide admission. Apply online; originals are usually not needed unless Nuffic asks.

  4. After admission: residence permit and money

    0/4

Only for students from outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland.

    • You cannot apply yourself: your institution, as a recognised sponsor, submits the application to the IND (and the entry visa, if you need one). Answer its requests quickly.

    • You must show enough money for 12 months — the IND study norm for university and hbo is €1,130.77 a month in 2026. Often you transfer this amount for one year to your institution's account. The amount changes every 1 January.

    • €254 for a first study residence permit, paid via your institution. It is not refunded if the application is refused.

    • If you only study, foreign insurance that covers the Netherlands is usually enough. As soon as you take a job — even part-time — Dutch basic health insurance becomes compulsory.

  5. After arrival

    0/2
    • If you stay longer than four months, register as a resident (BRP) and get your citizen service number (BSN). Bring a valid passport and documents such as your birth certificate. Many institutions organise registration days.

Only if it applies to you

    • Needed if you work or do an internship. You need your BSN to open it.

Questions

Do I need Studielink?

For most programmes, yes — you register there first and the institution then contacts you. Some institutions use their own application system for students from abroad, so check the programme page.

Do EU citizens need a residence permit?

No. Students from the EU, the EEA and Switzerland need no residence permit and no proof of funds for the IND. After arrival they register at the municipality like everyone else who stays longer than four months.

How much money do I need to show?

In 2026 the IND study norm for university and hbo is €1,130.77 a month — enough for 12 months. The amount changes on 1 January each year, so check the IND page before you transfer money.

Is this list complete for my programme?

No list can be. Programmes may ask for a portfolio, a selection test or an interview, or leave items out. Always compare with the documents list on your programme's page.
